The large Congregational Church complex in Lava Street, now occupied by the Salvation Army, was built in the early 1940s, replacing an earlier hall first built in 1905. The congregation, then known as the Independents was formed as early as 1862 and had land reserved for it on the south-west corner of Liebig Street and Lava Street. A church and later a Sunday school were built on the land but, by the late 1930s, these were too small, the land was very valuable and the congregation decided to sell. The original buildings were replaced by the Temperance and General Insurance Company, T&G, Building, one of Warrnambool’s most important Interwar buildings and one of the best examples of that firm’s iconic architecture in the state. The foundation stone of the present church was laid by the Rev, C. E. Tapp, Chairman of the Congregational Union of Victoria. The builder was John Aird and the architects were Marsh and Michaelson. The large Edwardian house on the south-east corner of Henna and Lava Streets, also occupied by the Salvation Army, was once owned by the Tait family, distinguished Presbyterians and lawyers in Warrnambool.
